Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom made up of more than 170 islands in the South Pacific, known as the “Friendly Islands.” Only about 36 of the islands are inhabited, with the main island Tongatapu home to the capital, Nuku‘alofa. Tonga is unique as the only Pacific nation never colonized, preserving its monarchy, culture, and traditions. The Tongan people are known for their hospitality, deep-rooted respect for family and community, and vibrant cultural expressions such as tau‘olunga dance, tapa (ngatu) making, kava ceremonies, and fine mats.
